Records on file at
Murray Lumber
date back to 1931, which indicate that the
company was then known as Grant Lumber & Fuelwhen they leased property from the railroad as that was a major mode of transportation during that era. Information also tells us that Grant Lumber & Fuel was owned by the Fremont Lumber & Fuel which was at the time operated by Mr. Daniel Gerber (of the the Gerber Baby Food Company).
At an unknown date the Grant location was closed for unknown reasons until 1962. At that time three entrepreneurial brothers; Lawrence, Maurice & Ronald Murray purchased the building, stocked it with the lumber & began the business under a new name; Murray Brothers Lumber Company. When they bought the business the railroad was still a strong influence as most of their product arrived by rail car. After a few years of operation Lawrence left the lumber yard to pursue a ministry helping with the construction of new church buildings. Maurice became the contractor for building projects sold by the lumber yard, while Ronald was the manager of the showroom and lumber yards sales operation.
During the early 1970's, Maurice retired from the company at about the same time that one of Ronald's sons, Dan, who had grown up working at the lumber yard started doing some of that contractor work. This proved to better serve their customers. In 1979, Dan and his wife Nancy purchased the business from Maurice and Ronald with the name being changed to Murray Lumber Company. Then in 1994 the business was incorporated when the name then became Murray Lumber & Supply Inc. to more accurately describe the business which sells a full line of quality lumber and building materials to both contractors and do-it-yourselfers.
